What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage massage is one of my most popular treatments – and understandably so, as it can bring incredible results.

Through helping your body’s natural toxin disposal systems to cleanse and refresh, lymphatic drainage massage can help you to feel calm, energised and lighter.

What is the lymphatic system?

To understand the benefits of lymphatic drainage massage, we first need to cover the basics of the lymphatic system itself. This intricate and sophisticated network of vessels and nodes is filled with lymph, a fluid which contains proteins, water, waste products and immune system remains. Essentially the lymphatic system filters and drains this debris to avoid it building up in the body, where it can have a negative effect on overall health as well as localised swelling and discomfort.

Sometimes, though, the body needs a little help to rid itself of waste products via the lymphatic system – and that’s where lymphatic drainage comes in. Through manipulating and massaging tissue externally with gentle yet firm strokes and movements, it’s possible to encourage the passage of fluid to the lymph nodes where it can be processed and eliminated. The biggest lymph nodes are in the armpits, groin and neck – so lymphatic drainage massage generally concentrates here to ensure the efficient elimination of lymph and waste.

What are the benefits of lymphatic drainage massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage helps the lymphatic system to work properly – which can relieve discomfort, pain and swelling caused by lymph disorders and conditions or a build-up of toxins in the system.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced swelling overall and in problem areas
  • Boosted immune system function
  • Clearer skin and greater definition in the face
  • Better body fluid balance
  • Improved circulation
  • Relaxation and a calmer, clearer mind

Is lymphatic drainage right for me?

Anyone can benefit from lymphatic drainage massage – but it might be a good option for you if:

  • You’ve been diagnosed with Lymphedema – a condition which causes swelling due to lymph fluid collecting in soft tissues
  • You’ve been diagnosed with autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • You have fibromyalgia or chronic pain
  • You have Lipedema
  • You are feeling swelling or puffiness in your face or arms/legs/feet and clothes are not fitting properly

What can I expect from a lymphatic drainage massage?

All treatments begin with a thorough consultation and friendly chat to understand what areas of concern you would like to address and how lymphatic drainage massage might be able to help.

You’ll then lie down and the treatment will begin, using manual massage techniques with a hypoallergenic body butter to soften and smooth the skin. All treatments are personalised, so we’ll be concentrating on areas that are most congested, or an overall massage if there are no specific points to focus on. Lymphatic drainage massage can be quite firm to improve lymph flow – but shouldn’t be painful, and you should be able to lie back and relax during your treatment.

As lymphatic drainage massage is purely therapeutic some practitioners choose to administer it as a medical treatment – however I like to combine the therapy with music and rich massage oils for a relaxing and calming experience and the holistic health benefits these can bring.

At McKenzie Remedial Massage you can enjoy specialist therapeutic massage offering real results and complete relaxation. If you have any questions or would like personalised advice on any of my treatments, please get in touch.
